Orthotics Q & A

Why do I need custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are supports you wear in your shoes. They’re designed to provide protection and support in just the right areas, while off-loading weight in other spots to allow injuries to heal if needed. Your podiatrist might recommend custom orthotics if you have:

  • Bunions or hammertoes
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sprained ankle
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Overpronation
  • Neuropathy
  • Arthritis
  • Flat feet

Prescription orthotics are even recommended for athletes in many cases. The added strain you place on your feet and ankles during training, especially with endurance sports, increases your risk of injury and overuse issues like stress fractures. Wearing orthotics can help lower your risk of certain pain-causing conditions.

What is the process of getting orthotics made?

When you come to Precision Footcare for your evaluation, Dr. Jurcisin thoroughly examines your feet and ankles and talks with you about your daily activities or limitations because of any chronic conditions. He either takes a mold of each of your feet or uses advanced 3D computer imaging to generate digital molds of your feet.

Once your molds and diagnosis are ready, your file is sent to a lab. Your prescription orthotics are then fabricated off-site and typically arrive back in the office within a couple of weeks.

How often do I need to wear my custom orthotics?

To help your feet and ankles heal, relieve pain and inflammation, and prevent further injury, Dr. Jurcisin might recommend wearing your custom orthotics every single day. Because you may have different pairs of shoes you wear throughout the day, such as gym shoes or work shoes, you might need different types of orthotic supports.

For example, the orthotics you wear in your gym shoes during workouts might not fit comfortably in the designer shoes you wear at the office. In cases like this, Dr. Jurcisin can help you get fitted for arch or heel supports — or another type of orthotic insert. This helps to ensure you have a supportive orthotic that fits comfortably into each pair of shoes you have, so you can wear supportive orthotics all day long.
